Bundesliga history
The Bundesliga was founded in 1963. Before, there was not really a German top flight but it was divided in regional leagues. The German league system underwent many changes throughout the years. As of today, Germany’s top 3 divisions are national leagues. The rest is split up into regions. After the foundation of a national football competition in 1963, German clubs became more successful in the European competitions. From the season 1973/1974 to 1982/1983 they had representatives reaching the Europa Cup I (former Champions League) seven times! Bayern Munchen won it three times during that period and absolutely dominated other German clubs when it came to silverware, both nationally and internationally. Many great players have played in the Bundesliga. Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben are just a few examples of those incredibly talented footballers.
Popular teams that play in the Bundesliga
The absolute number one in the Bundesliga is Bayern Munchen, without any doubt. Like we’ve said before, they have dominated German football by winning over 30 titles in Germany’s top division. Just to make it clear how much they’ve reigned supreme: Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach are second with five Bundesliga titles each. That makes those two clubs their biggest rivals nationally, specially Dortmund being somewhat of a threat in recent times, despite Bayern’s title streak (ten national titles in a row now). It automatically makes it easy to say that Bayern Munich is home to some of the best players in German Football and it is the club with the biggest fan base outside of its borders as well. Bayern has become extra likable due to the way the club is led in recent times. They managed to keep their dominance nationally and internationally despite investing less money compared to other European giants. Fans are also very important to them so they keep ticket prices low while they are in the position to ask much more. Nice gesture if you ask us.
We’ve mentioned Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach as the second and third most successful teams in the Bundesliga. There is a big group of football clubs that are competing to play in the Champions League and it rotates quite a lot over the years. As of late, Red Bull Leipzig has entered that battle after back to back promotions a couple of years ago. The German Bundesliga has become so competitive that enormous clubs like Hamburger SV, Schalke 04, Stuttgart and Werder Bremen all have been relegated at least once after the turn of the century. These clubs all possess stadiums with a capacity of well over 40.000 seats. Quite remarkable.
Tips for betting on the Bundesliga
Same with all the other big leagues out there, it’s easy to gather valuable information for every punter to create an edge on your bookmaker. Many websites are there to find all the latest updates on games, teams, players etc. There are a lot of factors that can have an effect on a certain game. The Bundesliga is perfect because there is such a big interest in it. Analyze it and find reasons to place a certain bet, that would be our advice. Bookmakers also have access to the same information. Though, they never include every single factor out there. They obviously have certain algorithms to decide those odds but things change over time and it’s impossible for bookies to keep up with everything at all times. Be careful with betting on Bayern Munich’s low odds. Don’t be fooled by them and don’t get lured in by them because you think it’s a risk free bet. Firstly, betting is never risk free obviously and secondly it’s extremely difficult to find value in super low odds. Opponents might also be extra motivated against the reigning champions. This applies to every league out there.
What type of bets are suitable for this league?
In our opinion, just like most leagues, the best bets are ‘Asian handicaps’. Determine which teams are in form and which teams aren’t. Don’t just look at the latest scores because that’s what basically every recreational punter is doing. Find other clues on why a certain game will go a certain way. This type of bet is perfect to bet against giant favorites. Betting against Bayern Munich in this case could give you some nice payouts. Sometimes you can even bet on Bayern to win with a maximum of a two goal margin at decent odds! Over/under markets are also interesting to bet on. Bundesliga games average a high when it comes to the amount of goals scored. ‘Match result and both teams to score’ or ‘both teams to score’ solely could be very interesting markets for this league as well.
Alternatives to betting on the Bundesliga
We’ve talked about the amount of goals scored per Bundesliga game which automatically makes this league comparable to the Dutch Eredivisie. The difference between those leagues is that there are multiple top clubs that really compete for the title until the end on many occasions. We’ve also mentioned that Bayern Munich is reigning supreme in their home country. This could mean that the Ligue 1 could be an alternative because of Paris Saint Germain’s dominance in France.
